Why Did Mercedes Extend the E-Class?
For much of the twentieth century, manufacturers designed cars around the driver as the most important person on board. Mercedes recognised, however, that some markets worked differently. A growing number of owners of executive and luxury cars travelled in the rear while entrusting the driving to professional chauffeurs.
That is how the idea of the E-Class Long was born.

That is how the idea of the E-Class Long was born.
The first factory-built version appeared in 2010 and was developed exclusively for the Chinese market. The objective was to retain the character and overall proportions of the E-Class while giving rear-seat passengers space approaching that of full-size luxury saloons.
The extra length was intended to improve more than legroom. A longer wheelbase also helps the car settle over road imperfections and remain more composed at higher speeds. It is a difference passengers are more likely to feel than to see.
Today, the E-Class Long occupies a distinctive place in the Mercedes-Benz range. It combines the discretion of the E-Class with a level of rear-seat comfort once associated almost exclusively with flagship limousines.
Did You Know?
The E-Class Long is not sold in most European markets. Mercedes developed it primarily for regions where owners frequently travel with a chauffeur. That is why the designers devoted unusual attention to the rear passenger compartment — a rare shift of emphasis in the history of the E-Class.
Latest Generation
The current E-Class Long is based on the latest E-Class, but it has been developed as a distinct model rather than simply a stretched version of the standard saloon. It provides even more space for rear-seat passengers, improved cabin insulation and suspension tuned for greater ride comfort. The changes are deliberately subtle, yet they are precisely what matters on journeys lasting several hours.
