A Car Born from Engineering Ambition, Not from the Pursuit of Luxury
When Maybach is discussed, the words “luxury”, “prestige” and “comfort” are usually the first to appear. They are accurate, but they were not the starting point of the brand. Maybach began with the pursuit of technical excellence.
Karl Maybach, son of one of the pioneers behind the earliest Mercedes automobiles, approached car building from an engineering-first perspective, making every decision around the technical solution rather than the price. The Maybach marque grew from the belief that a car should not be a compromise between what engineering could achieve and what production costs would allow. He sought to bring to automobiles the reliability, refinement and precision associated with his work on Zeppelin airships — machines that could not afford to fail after hours in the air.

He sought to bring to automobiles the reliability, refinement and precision associated with his work on Zeppelin airships — machines that could not afford to fail after hours in the air.
The first W3, unveiled in 1921, featured engineering solutions ahead of its time — four-wheel braking, an innovative transmission and a six-cylinder engine, followed later by Germany’s first series-production V12. Its exceptional refinement quickly became a hallmark of the marque. The W3 was a demonstration of what engineering could achieve, introducing solutions that would later become standard. Its build quality soon earned Maybach recognition among industrialists, entrepreneurs and heads of state.
Maybach never set out to become a mass-production manufacturer. Not because it lacked the capability, but because Karl Maybach was unwilling to simplify the engineering merely to increase production volume. Each car was treated as an individual project. Vehicles were assembled by hand, often with bodies commissioned from independent coachbuilders. The customer purchased Maybach’s chassis and mechanical engineering as the foundation.
The first model was introduced with the guiding principle of “creating the best of the best.” It remains just as relevant today. Modern Mercedes-Maybach continues the same philosophy: the car must first be technically accomplished and deliver the highest standard of passenger comfort. Luxury is the result of that work, not its objective.
Did You Know?
A Mercedes-Maybach can be recognised from a distance by the small triangular window behind the rear door. On the S-Class, this window forms part of the door; on the Maybach, it is integrated into the rear pillar. This allows for shorter rear doors while extending the rear passenger compartment, improving comfort and privacy. It is one of the most distinctive details of the Mercedes-Maybach body.
Latest Generation
The current Mercedes-Maybach is based on the latest S-Class, but it is far more than a more lavishly equipped version of the same car. It has a longer body, enhanced cabin insulation, bespoke suspension tuning and features developed specifically around rear-seat passengers. It does not rely on an abundance of screens or chrome to make an impression. Its defining quality is the composure with which it covers distance. Every element is engineered to make the journey feel as calm and effortless as possible.
