When Mercedes Decided a Van Could Replace a Limousine
For many years, vans were associated primarily with practicality: carrying families, employees and luggage. Mercedes approached the segment differently and asked a simple question: could a vehicle seating up to seven people offer the same level of comfort and finish as a limousine?
The answer was the V-Class.

The answer was the V-Class.
The objective was to create a genuine passenger vehicle designed around comfort from the outset. That changed the perception of the segment. Hotels, airports, business-aviation operators and VIP transport providers began replacing traditional limousines with vehicles that offered comparable comfort and far more space, while allowing an entire family or several colleagues to travel together.
The Long version expresses this philosophy even more clearly. Its additional length was not created to add more seats, but to give passengers greater freedom of movement and make luggage management easier for the chauffeur. As a result, the V-Class is equally suited to a short transfer and a journey of several hundred kilometres across Europe.
Did You Know?
Mercedes sold the model as the Viano for eleven years before restoring the V-Class name in 2014. This was more than a change of badge. Mercedes wanted to draw a clear distinction between a luxury passenger vehicle and the commercial Vito, showing that although the two share a platform, they were developed for very different purposes.
Latest Generation
The current V-Class Long in the VIP Drivers fleet is the result of the continued development of the generation introduced in 2014. The most important changes were not to its dimensions, but to the way the interior feels. The cabin became quieter, more refined and more intuitive to use, bringing the V-Class closer to Mercedes-Benz’s contemporary luxury saloons.
